How to Upload Music to YouTube Music from India

You cannot upload songs to YouTube Music directly. Here is how Indian artists release on YouTube Music via a distributor and get an Official Artist Channel.

Quick answer: Artists cannot upload songs straight into YouTube Music. You deliver the song through a music distributor, and it then appears on YouTube Music, usually together with Spotify, Apple Music and JioSaavn. Once your release is live, you can ask YouTube to link it to an Official Artist Channel.

A very common question from Indian artists is how to put a song on YouTube Music. Many start by uploading an audio file to their own YouTube channel. That is fine for sharing, but it does not make your song an official release on YouTube Music, and it does not carry proper credits or streaming royalties.

YouTube upload vs YouTube Music release

  • Uploading a video to your channel: you publish a video yourself. It is not a distributed release.
  • Releasing through a distributor: your track is delivered with its metadata, ISRC and artwork, and appears in the YouTube Music catalog.

Steps to get your music on YouTube Music

  1. Prepare your files. You need a WAV master, square cover art and correct metadata. Our guides on cover art requirements and ISRC and UPC codes cover the basics.
  2. Upload to a distributor. On SapneDigital you upload once and choose YouTube Music among 160+ stores.
  3. Wait for the release to go live. Submit early so there is time for checks.
  4. Link your artist profile. Once your music is live, you can request an Official Artist Channel from YouTube. Check YouTube Help for the latest rules.

What about Content ID?

Content ID is a separate system. It finds your music when other creators use it in their videos, so you can claim and monetise it. Read our YouTube Content ID guide for Indian artists. If you also want your own VEVO channel, see the VEVO channel setup guide.

Common mistakes

  • Uploading the track only as a video and expecting it to show on YouTube Music.
  • Different artist names on different releases, which splits your profile.
  • Submitting at the last minute with no time to fix metadata.

Frequently asked questions

Can I upload songs directly to YouTube Music?

Not as an artist release. Songs appear on YouTube Music through a music distributor that delivers your track, artwork and metadata. Uploading a video to your own YouTube channel is different and does not create an official YouTube Music release.

What is an Official Artist Channel?

It is a verified channel that brings your releases, music videos and topic content together under one artist page on YouTube. YouTube sets the eligibility rules, so check YouTube Help for the current requirements.

Is YouTube Music the same as Content ID?

No. YouTube Music delivery puts your song in the YouTube Music catalog. Content ID is a separate tool that detects your music in other creators videos so you can monetise it.

How long does it take for my song to appear on YouTube Music?

Delivery times vary by release and store. Submit your release well before your planned release date so it is live on the day.
