In India, a big share of a song's life happens on YouTube: reels, Shorts, wedding videos, lyric videos, covers and dance clips. If your song is used in thousands of those videos and you do not have Content ID, all that viewing earns you nothing. This guide explains how Content ID works, how to get it as an Indian artist, and how to avoid the most common problem: wrong claims on your own channel.
How YouTube Content ID works
- Your distributor sends the master audio of your song to YouTube as a reference file.
- YouTube scans every new and existing upload, including Shorts, for a match.
- When it finds your song, it places a claim on that video.
- Depending on the policy set, the claim lets you monetise the video (ads run and the revenue comes to you), track it (you only see the views), or block it.
For most independent artists, monetise is the right choice. People keep using your song, and you get paid for it.
Who can get Content ID in India?
YouTube only gives Content ID access to partners that manage large catalogues, such as labels and distributors. As an individual artist you get it through your distributor. Your song must be 100% yours: original composition, original recording, and no unlicensed samples, beats bought on a non-exclusive licence, or copied melodies. Content ID is not available for covers, remixes of other people's songs, or royalty-free beats that other artists also use, because the system cannot tell your version from theirs.
Content ID vs Official Artist Channel
| Content ID | Official Artist Channel (OAC) | |
|---|---|---|
| What it does | Earns money when others use your song | Merges your channel and Topic channel, gives the music note badge |
| Who gives it | Your distributor | YouTube, requested through your distributor |
| Typical requirement | Original, fully owned recording | An active channel and official releases on YouTube Music |
Common problem: claims on your own videos
Once Content ID is active, YouTube may also claim your song on your own channel, or on a video of a brand or creator you gave permission to. This is normal and easy to fix. Your distributor can whitelist channels or release the claim. On SapneDigital, any artist (and any white-label panel artist) can raise a claim release request from the dashboard for free by sharing the track, ISRC and video link.
How to get Content ID with SapneDigital
- Create an account and choose the Elite Label plan, which includes YouTube Content ID.
- Upload your release with correct metadata and a valid ISRC. See ISRC and UPC codes explained.
- Confirm that you own 100% of the composition and recording.
- After the release goes live, Content ID starts matching videos and the revenue appears in your royalty reports.
You can also set up a VEVO channel through SapneDigital; read our VEVO channel setup guide for India.
Frequently asked questions
How can an Indian artist get YouTube Content ID?
Independent artists get Content ID through a distributor or label approved by YouTube. The distributor sends your song as a reference file and collects the revenue from matched videos for you. SapneDigital includes Content ID in its Elite Label plan.
Can I get Content ID for a cover song or a non-exclusive beat?
No. Content ID only works for recordings and compositions you fully own. Covers, remixes and beats that other artists also licence are not eligible.
Why is my own YouTube video getting a copyright claim?
When Content ID is active it can match your song on your own channel too. Ask your distributor to whitelist your channel or release the claim. On SapneDigital you can raise a free claim release request from your dashboard.
Does Content ID work on YouTube Shorts?
Yes. Content ID scans Shorts as well as regular videos, and Shorts using your music count toward your YouTube earnings.
