For independent artists in India, Instagram Reels is often where a song first catches on. A hook used in a few thousand Reels can send people to Spotify, JioSaavn and YouTube Music to hear the full track. That only works if your song is actually available in the Instagram music library. This guide covers how to get it there, how long it takes, and what to check if it does not show up.
How songs get into the Instagram and Facebook music library
- You upload your song, cover art and metadata to a distributor such as SapneDigital.
- The distributor delivers the release to Meta (the company behind Instagram and Facebook) along with Spotify, Apple Music, JioSaavn, YouTube Music and other stores.
- Meta checks the audio and rights information and adds the track to its music library.
- Creators can now search your song name or artist name in the Reels or Stories music picker and use it in their videos.
- When people use your song, the earnings are reported back to your distributor and show up in your royalty reports.
Step-by-step: release your song on Instagram Reels with SapneDigital
- Create a free SapneDigital account and pick the plan that suits you on the pricing section.
- Upload your final mastered audio (WAV is best) and square cover art. Check our cover art requirements so your release is not rejected.
- Fill the metadata carefully: song title, primary artist, featured artists, language, genre, lyricist and composer. Avoid the errors listed in common music metadata mistakes.
- In the store list, make sure Instagram & Facebook is selected. You can see all platforms on our Instagram & Facebook distribution page.
- Choose a release date at least two days ahead. More lead time gives every store, including Meta, time to process the release before your promotion starts.
- Submit the release. After it goes live, search your song in the Instagram Reels music picker from a personal or Creator account.
Plan your Reels before the release date
A song that is in the library is not automatically a song that goes viral. A few things help:
- Pick the hook. Decide which 15 to 30 seconds of the song works best for Reels: usually the chorus or a strong opening line. Tell your fans and creators which part to use.
- Post the first Reels yourself. Use your own song in several Reels on release day so the audio page shows activity from the start.
- Work with small creators. Dancers, lip-sync creators, wedding videographers and meme pages in your language can push a song further than one big post.
- Point to the full song. Put your Spotify or JioSaavn link in your bio so people who like the clip can stream the full track.
Song not showing on Instagram? Check these
| Problem | What to check |
|---|---|
| Release is live on Spotify but not on Instagram | Meta processes releases on its own timeline. Give it some days after the release goes live before raising a ticket. |
| Song shows on a friend's phone but not yours | Business accounts only see Meta's royalty-free sound collection. Switch to a Creator or personal account to use commercial music. |
| Search returns nothing | Search the exact song title together with the artist name as entered in your metadata, including spelling and spacing. |
| Song removed or never appeared | The track may have a rights problem: an uncleared sample, a cover without a licence, or audio that matches another release. Contact SapneDigital support with your ISRC. |
| Wrong artist profile linked | This usually comes from a mismatched artist name. Use exactly the same artist name on every release. |
How earnings from Reels work
Meta licenses music for use in Reels, Stories and posts and pays royalties for that use. The money is reported to your distributor and appears in your SapneDigital royalty reports along with your other stores. Per-use earnings from social platforms are small; the bigger value of Reels is discovery, which turns into streams on paid platforms. To understand how all of these royalties fit together, read music royalties in India explained.
Also protect your song on YouTube
A song that trends on Reels usually spreads to YouTube Shorts as well. With YouTube Content ID you can earn from those videos too. See our guide to YouTube Content ID for Indian artists, and when you are ready, release your next song on SapneDigital.
Frequently asked questions
Can I upload my song directly to Instagram music?
No. Instagram and Facebook do not take uploads from individual artists. Your song reaches the Meta music library through a music distributor. When you release with SapneDigital, select Instagram & Facebook as a store and your track is delivered to Meta.
Why can I not find my song on Instagram Reels?
The most common reasons are: the release is not live yet, Meta is still processing it, you are searching from a Business account (which only sees royalty-free music), the song name or artist name is spelled differently, or Meta rejected the track because of a rights or content issue.
Do I earn money when people use my song in Reels?
Yes. Meta pays royalties for the use of licensed music in Reels and Stories, and these earnings reach you through your distributor in your royalty reports. Per-use amounts are small, but a song used in thousands of Reels also drives streams on Spotify, JioSaavn and YouTube Music.
Can I put an AI song or a cover song on Instagram?
AI-assisted songs can be distributed on SapneDigital if you mark them correctly at upload and own the rights. A cover song needs a licence from the original composition owner; without it Meta and other stores can reject or remove the track.
